Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is celebrated in the UK every year on November 5th. It commemorates the failure of a conspiracy to kill the King of England, James I, and his family in 1605. This conspiracy is known as the Gunpowder Plot.

A group of men were planning to blow up the Houses of Parliament on the day of its state opening. However, the plot was discovered and the men were executed. Bonfire Night is also known as Guy Fawkes Night because Guy Fawkes was the most famous man in the group.

The celebrations involve firework displays and the building of large bonfires. Sometimes people make an effigy of Guy Fawkes called a ´guy´ and they burn it on top of the bonfire. In the past, children would use their ´guys´ to raise the money to buy fireworks. They would push the guys through the streets shouting, ´Penny for the guy!´. On Bonfire Night people traditionally eat baked potatoes, which are potatoes wrapped in foil and cooked in the bonfire.

El 5 de noviembre de cada año se celebra Bonfire Night en el Reino Unido. Esa noche conmemora el fracaso de un complot para asesinar al rey de Inglaterra y a su familia en el año 1605, complot que se llama la "Conspiración de la pólvora".

Un grupo de hombres estaba planeando volar el Parlamento Británico el día de su inauguración oficial, pero se descubrió el complot y los hombres fueron ejecutados. Se conoce Bonfire Night también como la "Noche de Guy Fawkes", porque Guy Fawkes fue el hombre más famoso de ese grupo.

Las celebraciones conllevan fuegos artificiales y la construcción de grandes hogueras. A veces la gente hace una efigie de Guy Fawkes, llamada guy, y la queman encima de la hoguera. En el pasado, los niñsolían usar las guys para recaudar fondos para comprar fuegos artificiales y las empujaban por las calles diciendo "¡Un penique para la guy!". En la noche de Bonfire Night, la gente come, tradicionalmente, patatas asadas, que son patatas envueltas en papel de aluminio y asadas en la hoguera.

Would

Se puede usar el verbo would con el infinitivo de otro verbo para hablar de actividades que solíamos hacer en el pasado.

¡OJO! Para hablar de actividades que no solíamos hacer en el pasado, utilizamos el negativo del verbo used to. ~~I wouldn´t go to bed late.~~ I didn´t use to go to bed late. No solía acostarme tarde.

¡Ten cuidado! Algunas palabras españolas pueden parecerse a palabras inglesas, pero de hecho en inglés tienen significados diferentes. Llamamos a estas palabras false friends (falsos amigos).
